Acupuncture is a medical practice based on principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
developed over 4000 years ago. Treatment involves inserting thin, sterile, disposable needles
into neurovascular nodes on the body – commonly known as acupuncture points. These points
often lie on channels that correlate to vessels, organs and nerves within the body. Acupuncture
treatment is based on anatomy and physiology, although the language used in TCM is very
different than that used in Western medicine.
TCM views the patient as an individual, taking into account previous history, environmental
influences, and constitution to develop a diagnosis. Therefore, patients being treated for the
same health concerns often have different treatment plans.
Recent research on the effectiveness of acupuncture has demonstrated measurable effects on
neural pathways, reflexive & central reactions in the brain, mechanical signaling through
connective tissue, and others. Research has also shown that most points used are located at
areas where connective tissue aggregates, and are located where there is a high density of free
nerve endings. By impacting neural pathways, acupuncture has the ability to affect a multitude
of systems including those that control pain, neurotransmitters, hormones, and organ
functions. This makes it a comprehensive system to treat a wide range of health conditions.
There are many benefits of acupuncture due to its effects on multiple systems, but primary
benefits include pain relief, increase in blood flow, reduction of inflammation, and activation of
the parasympathetic nervous system (your rest & digest system).
