Chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the maintenance and restoration of health. A normally functioning spine and healthy lifestyle contribute to your body’s ability to heal itself. Your spinal cord, which is protected by your spine, is the main pathway of your nervous system and controls feeling, movement, and other functions of your body. Your chiropractor will look at your overall health, your spine, and your lifestyle to develop an individualized treatment plan for you.
Examination & Diagnosis
Examination and diagnosis includes a health history and physical exam (which may include orthopedic and neurological testing, or x-rays). Your treatment plan will depend on your chiropractor’s findings and may include consultation with other medical specialists. Treatment may include manual pressure to reposition vertebrae into proper alignment. Moist heat, ice packs, massage and traction may be used in conjunction with the adjustment and your chiropractor may recommend stretches and exercises to strengthen muscles.
The vertebrae that protect your spinal column should move freely, but can shift out of alignment causing nerve irritation resulting in pain, tingling, or numbness. Muscle tension and imbalance is also common. Joints can become restricted causing pain and discomfort.
Discs provide a cushion between vertebrae and can bulge or rupture due to excessive forces from injury or chronic misalignment. Pressure from a bulging or ruptured disc can lead to pain or numbness in your neck, back or legs.
